چکیده

Aims. We present new radio continuum observations of ten BIMA SONG galaxies, taken at 1.4 GHz with the Very Large Array. These observations allow us to extend the study of the relationships between the radio continuum (RC) and CO emission to 22 CO luminous galaxies for which single dish CO images have been added to interferometric data. New Spitzer infrared (IR) images of six of these galaxies have been released. The analysis of these high resolution images allowed us to probe the RC-IR-CO correlations down to linear scales of a few hundred

Galaxy Evolution: Modeling the Role of Non-thermal Pressure in the Interstellar medium

Galaxy evolution depends strongly on the physics of the interstellar medium (ISM). Motivated by the need to incorporate the properties of the ISM in cosmological simulations, we construct a simple method to include the contribution of non-thermal components in the calculation of pressure of interstellar gas. In our method, we treat three non-thermal components turbulence, magnetic fields and co...

On the Origin of the Global Schmidt Law of Star Formation

One of the most puzzling properties of observed galaxies is the universality of the empirical correlation between the star formation rate and average gas surface density on kiloparsec scales (the Schmidt law). In this study I present results of self-consistent cosmological simulations of high-redshift galaxy formation that reproduce the Schmidt law naturally, without assuming it, and provide so...

X-ray Emission from the Hot Interstellar Medium and Southwest Radio Lobe of the Nearby Radio Galaxy Centaurus A

We present results from two Chandra/ACIS-I observations and one XMM-Newton observation of X-ray emission from the interstellar medium (ISM) and the inner radio lobes of the nearby radio galaxy Centaurus A. The ISM has an average radial surface brightness profile that is well described by a -model profile with index 1⁄4 0:40 0:04 and a temperature of kBTISM 0:29 keV beyond 2 kpc from the nucleus...

XMM - Newton observations of the starburst merger galaxies NGC 3256 & NGC 3310

We present XMM-Newton EPIC observations of the two nearby starburst merger galaxies NGC 3256 & NGC 3310. The broad-band (0.3–10 keV) integrated X-ray emission from both galaxies shows evidence of multi-phase thermal plasmas plus an underlying hard non-thermal power-law continuum. NGC 3256 is well-fit with a model comprising two MEKAL components (kT =0.6/0.9 keV) plus a hard power-law (Γ=2), whi...

On the Magnetic Field in the Kiloparsec - Scale Jet of Radio Galaxy M 87

Several low-power kiloparsec-scale jets in nearby radio galaxies are known for their synchrotron radiation extending up to optical and X-ray photon energies. Here we comment on high-energy γ-ray emission of one particular object of this kind, i.e. the kiloparsec-scale jet of M 87 radio galaxy, resulting from comptonization of the starlight photon field of the host galaxy by the synchrotron-emit...
